Carya illinoinensis
The Hardy Pecan Tree, the largest of the hickories, is a deciduous tree with a symmetrical, broadly oval crown and massive branches. Its major limbs grow upward and outward in a distinctive spreading pattern, while older trees develop wide-sweeping lower branches that nearly touch the ground. The trunk can reach up to 6 feet in diameter. Due to its impressive size, this tree is best suited for large properties and serves as an excellent shade tree in naturalized, woodland, or recreational areas.
