Magnolia grandiflora 'D.D. Blanchard'

This broadleaf evergreen stands out with its rich, dark green foliage and large, delightfully fragrant flowers that can span up to 8 inches. It blooms in late spring and continues to offer occasional blossoms through summer. The flowers develop into round, cone-like fruit clusters, 3 to 5 inches long, which ripen from late summer to early fall, revealing rose-red seeds that dangle from fine threads. Its straight central trunk allows it to grow full to the ground or be shaped into a tree form with an exposed trunk. With open, pyramidal branches, it makes an excellent shade tree.
